<image:title>Organization - When it comes to organization, bigger is not always better!</image:title>
<image:caption>For years, I utilized various bins, crates, boxes, bags, etc. to store my SUV camping supplies, which made every camping experience a unique challenge. Once I consolidated to just ONE type and size of bin for storing SUV camping essentials, it made packing, loading, camping, and unloading my camping gear much easier. That one bin is the 17 gallon black and yellow bin! It is an inexpensive solution to your SUV camping gear organizational challenges! This bin allows, by far, the most volume of camping supplies inside the Suburban. The main reason is it can be stacked 3-high. Trust me, I did the math and if there were nothing but 17 gallon bins in the back of the Suburban, they will provide significantly more storage than larger bins and they are much easier to handle and store. The 17 gallon bins stack securely, the lids fit tight, and they are very water resistant - just keep in mind the lids will collect water. Please note they are not dust resistant! Here are the bins I utilize to organize my SUV camping supplies…</image:caption>

      <image:title>SUV Gear - A note on securing a cargo box</image:title>
<image:caption>Initially, I utilized short ratchet straps to secure the box for travel, but they were a major pain to work with, and it felt like I was solving a puzzle every time I loaded the box. So, I came up with a permanent solution by wrapping adjustable bungee cords to the cargo rack cross bars near each end of the box. Now, all I have to do is connect the bungee hooks to each end of the box, tighten it up, and then it is ready to go! The bungee cords are not as secure as ratchet straps, but keep in mind I also have the box chained to the rack, so I am confident it is not going anywhere!</image:caption>

There are five bins loaded down the right side - two lengthwise and then a stack of three sideways. The stove is on the floor sitting on its side between the two stacks. The Yeti cooler is in the front passenger seat and the space heater and/or propane heater are on that seat’s floorboard. The red cooler on top of the battery bin was removed for photo. My sleeping bag and blankets are in the side cargo net window storage. The propane tank and one of the canopy bins, with the solar panel mounted on the lid, are in the hitch cargo carrier. All I need to do upon arrival is move the red cooler to the front seat, so I have a clear exit out the rear hatch window, and then it is lights out! Please note on this trip, I did not bring a table, as I utilized my hitch cargo carrier kitchen option (see below).</image:caption>

I can comfortably stand under the ridge and there is still enough room underneath to do all the things you do when the canopy is at full height. You can also open up the rear hatch and use it to bridge the canopy and the Suburban together. Keep in mind, there should be no connection between the canopy and the Suburban just in case the canopy lets loose.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Configurations - Storm and summer mode</image:title>
<image:caption>The canopy is up and it is storming or there is a storm coming in and you want to protect the canopy, and stay dry inside the vehicle with the front and/or rear windows open. Move the Suburban completely under the canopy, and then tie down the canopy to the Suburban. You can utilize the appropriate configuration above to secure all the gear and keep it dry. BE SURE TO NOT BLOCK ANY EXITS, and keep in mind, the fate of the canopy is tied to the Suburban, so see below if there are high winds. This mode can also be used in hot weather to provide shade, so you can feel cooler inside..</image:caption>

      <image:title>Configurations - Hitch cargo carrier kitchen</image:title>
<image:caption>One day it dawned on me that not only could the hitch cargo carrier be used to haul camping gear and secure a generator at camp, but it could also be used as a kitchen! Keep in mind, the hitch cargo carrier needs to be stabilized and leveled. I use two ratcheting cargo bars - one on a front and back corner to level it. I place the stove in the top basket and place two oak planks on the bottom basket to make a shelf. I am just over 6 feet tall, and the top basket is at its highest level, so the stove is at a good and safe level. The baskets are adjustable, so you can raise and lower them to meet your needs.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Configurations - Double camp</image:title>
<image:caption>Whether you are quick camping or full camping with two people, the loading configuration is the same. Two bins are placed lengthwise down the passenger side with the toilet on top, and the Yeti cooler is placed sideways behind that stack. The toilet privacy tent and chairs are down the right side, and the waterjugs are behind the Yeti. Both mattresses are in front of the battery bin and red cooler stack, and there are two bins placed sideways in front of the mattresses with the fan on top. There is room in front of that stack to place pillows, luggage, and other loose items. There is no sleep bin, as I put the sleeping bags and blankets in the rear window spaces behind the cargo nets, and no table, as we had picnic tables available at each campsite. For a quick camp setup, leave the battery bin in place, and put four bins, the chairs, toilet, fan and/or heater up front (see below) and the Yeti cooler on the center console. Then put the other cooler, one bin, and the water jug under the back bumper of the vehicle. Keep in mind it is not waterproof there, so put a small tarp over the top of the bin. There is room at the foot of each bed for backpacks and/or duffels. Then, fold out the mattresses and grab your sleeping gear from the shelves/cargo net area, and you are good to go!</image:caption>

<image:title>Configurations - Solo quick camp with activity gear</image:title>
<image:caption>The setup is the same as above, but I put the red cooler back in its spot for the picture. This was a skiing and “light gear” fishing trip. My skis and poles are in the roof cargo carrier, the ski duffel is on top the stack of two bins behind the right rear passenger seat, and my boot bag is on top of the Yeti cooler in the passenger seat. I hauled the propane tank and one of the canopy bins with the solar panel mounted on the lid in the hitch cargo carrier, which I also utilized for the kitchen setup (see below), so there is no table loaded. Again, all I have to do is move the red cooler to the driver seat and jump in a go to sleep!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Configurations - Solo full camp</image:title>
<image:caption>You will be spending more than one night camping in a location and will have plenty of time to unload and set up, so you do not need to have the bed ready to go. I still use the solo quick camp configuration as the foundation, but without the bed setup, there is plenty of room inside, so you can forego the hitch cargo carrier even if you are bringing the canopy. The key is to place bins lengthwise down one side and crosswise down the other, and then with the extra room, there is no need to stack bins 3-high.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Configurations - Quick Camp</image:title>
<image:caption>You are either making a quick one night stop or the weather is not conducive for the canopy and/or exposing all your gear to the elements. This picture is from a solo two-night winter camping stay with snow and high winds. I have simply unloaded the kitchen, food, and beverage bins along with the food cooler. The solar panel is on top of the canopy bin, which was in the hitch cargo carrier with the propane tank, so I unloaded those items and used the hitch cargo carrier kitchen setup (see below).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Safety - 10. Secure your load!</image:title>
<image:caption>The modular/no-build approach means you are carrying a lot of camping supplies in the Suburban and while most of it is contained in bins, you must make sure everything in and on the vehicle is secure and passengers are protected from the load shifting. I utilize a heavy-duty cargo net to secure all the camping gear in the back, and I also assure all the solo camp items are secure. For example, if I place the generator on the floorboard behind the passenger seat, I will move the passenger seat back so it is locked in place, and if the Yeti cooler is on the passenger seat, I will use the seat belt to secure it. I utilize a departure checklist, which includes assuring the cargo carrier, cargo rack, and hitch cargo carrier along with all their contents are secure before I depart. And finally, do not exceed the roof load limit of your vehicle as indicated in your owner’s manual!</image:caption>
